This is a IR remote, not the typical RF remote used for most beds, so the remote needs to transmit invisible light signals to a receiver.
You can test if the IR LEDs are working by using an Android phone camera. (Some iPhone cameras don't show IR light)
The rubber keypad is large and creates a lot of goopy oil. You will likely have to strip down the remote and clean the housing and rubber pad using hot soapy water. A lot of isopropyl alcohol will be needed to clean the circuit board. There may be lumps of buildup on circuit tracings where the oils and contaminates react chemically with the exposed metal parts. These messy lumps can be easily scraped off with a tool (plastic, wood, metal).
To repair the button contacts you can use ButtonWorx™ 7mm buttons: https://buttonworx.com/universal/158-119-BW-7R12.html#/32-package-package_of_10
Once you remove the screws for the back housing, the circuit board is only held in by friction on the 5 plastic posts. You can push out the board by pressing down on the rubber buttons to push out the rubber keypad and circuit board. Just alternate buttons, you can't push out the board on just one side or corner... you have to wiggle it out.
